Competing in China for the very first time, Gamefy caught up with Jacky 'EternalEnvy' Mao, captain of Speed Gaming for an interview about his thoughts on China, Speed winning MLG Columbus and his thoughts on Chinese teams.
Translation of interview:
What he thinks about China and G-League
EE: I think China is very cool. You can go anywhere by taking the taxi and things are cheap as well. We can buy all the food that we like. G-League should be the hardest tournament, even tougher than MLG. Coming to China, I have mentally prepared myself to lose many games. We have lost many scrims and we plan to play a lot better before the tournament starts. Hopefully we can win the tournament, like Na`Vi (Na`Vi was the sole western competitor in Alienware Cup and they won it).
On DK and Chinese teams
EE: I don't think DK is a very Chinese team. Their playstyle is very unique. They can be very explosive and sometimes their performance aren't that good. Therefore, playing DK in MLG does not mean we know the Chinese teams very well. We do think the Chinese teams are the strongest right now, although western teams are quite similar in skill level, the Chinese teams are still slightly better.
On difference in sponsorship between China and the rest of the world
EE: It's very common to not have sponsorship in the west. In China, you look for the sponsorship before the team members. It's not very common at all outside of China especially for new players like us. There are more new players in the west and more older players in China. Prior to this, something happened to us and that was a difficult time for us but it is just funny now.
Thoughts on being called EE-Sama
EE: I remember the first time a few fans called me EE-sama, I asked them not to call me that because I feel it is disrespectful to BurNing all the other Gods. I got used to it later though.
Thoughts about Alliance after getting kicked out of No Tidehunter
EE: We don't usually beat Alliance in scrims. Sometimes after we defeated them 2:0, we played again and they defeated us 3:0. In tournaments, it is always very one-sided, close games are very rare. I have nothing against them. It is hard to play if you have the vengeance in you. As a player, I still respect them a lot.
Blink Dagger on Clinkz
EE: I bought Blink on Clinkz about a year and half ago. I always thought that the item is good on Clinkz but I stopped myself from buying in official games because trying out new stuff in official games can be really scary. I learned Clinkz from BurNing, at that time, DK was very fond of this hero. I learned purchasing Soul Ring from him as well. Slowly, I felt that rushing Orchid of Malevolence is rather unnecessary and I started buying Blink Dagger since. Initially, I buy Black King Bar before Blink Dagger but I'm starting to buy it earlier and earlier. Now I buy Blink Dagger after my secondary boots. Blink Dagger on Clinkz is not my idea although I have done this for a long time now. It is just a trend, a lot of people buy it after they got their Black King Bar but I buy it as soon as possible.
Preparation for G-League
EE: We are actually quite scared that Chinese teams will start discussing among one another about our strategies. Thus, we did not practice much of our new strategies during training. Guess we have to wait for the official games to see if we will be using it. I know some Chinese teams will also conceal their strategies, I don't have much thoughts about their gameplay.
